🌱 #IsleLions Schools Growing Competitions 🌻Each spring, Lion Bren Slingsby drops off seed potatoes to every primary school across the Isle of Axholme, challenging pupils to grow the heaviest harvest. Later in spring, he returns with sunflower seedlings for a tallest-sunflower challenge. Despite a very dry summer, our young growers smashed it!

🥔 Potato Champions: Eastoft CE Primary harvested an amazing 4.73 kg from a single seed potato, earning £100 for future garden projects.
🌻 Sunflower Stars: Luddington & Garthorpe Primary (part of Riverside Federation with Eastoft) grew the tallest sunflower, also winning £100. Lion Bren said: “They must be doing something right in the very North of the Isle when it comes to gardening lessons! All the potatoes were quickly turned into chips and enjoyed, a tasty cookery lesson!” 👏 Big shout-out to Years 1 & 2 green-fingered growers, teacher Annabelle Thornton, teaching assistant Sarah Lee, Lion President Barry Cooper, and Lion Bren Slingsby for cheering everyone on. 💛 We’re not just growing potatoes and sunflowers, we’re growing community. Interested in becoming a Lion? 📧 [email protected] 👋 Come say hello at the Co-op, Epworth on Saturday 25 October. #IsleOfAxholme #IsleLions #CommunityGrowing #SchoolGardens #YoungGrowers |

A lovely donation was made to the Isle of Axholme Lions Club by Evergreen Garden Care (Chrisanthi Bartley-Waldron, who is also a Lion member) to assist Lion Bren with his on-going community project of getting all the local school growing Sunflowers and Potatoes.
