This year more than ever we have more and more people volunteering to make a difference during the COVID19 Pandemic – if you want to keep hold of that magic feeling why not see what we as Lions do all year round.

Isle Lions supporting communities during COVID-19 crisis
Isle of Axholme lions have donated £1,000 from their funds and to support the Food Banks in both Crowle and Epworth at this critical time.Lion President Glyn Snowden said: “This is significant sum of money that we are putting to good use straight away. As soon as we realised the potential problems some of our local residents might be having, in putting food on the table, at the end of March we made emergency payments from our funds, raised in the Isle, to both Food Banks. This Coronavirus pandemic is hurting lots of local people in lots of different ways - just because we are all social distancing doesn’t stop us from caring - we are doing what we can. This cash injection will help us do more in our local community to help those who need it most.
We are delighted to be working with the Baptist Church in Epworth who are the focus of Food Bank assistance in the South of the Isle, and Mayor of Crowle Alan Rayment and Councillor Julie Reid on behalf of the Crowle Town Council Food Bank initiative.”
When a humanitarian crisis strikes, the Lions Clubs Foundation of the British Isles works with and are guided by their own Lions members who are ordinary people actively working at the heart of their communities.

Easter Egg "Catastrophe"! Lions Appeal for help.

Thanks to everyone, all sorted!
Every year, as part of their fundraising efforts, Isle of Axholme Lions buy about 40 Giant Easter Eggs from a chocolatier company in Bridlington and they go into pubs as raffles around the Isle and Lions visit Holmes and Gardens Centre in Epworth for three weekends to sell raffle tickets with a winner every day.
This year is now presenting a problem as isle Lions have a large clutch of chocolate eggs with no one ready to hatch – or eat – them. Lion Richard Baker said “We have distributed some to pubs and they may well have sold some chances to win, but now they are closed until after Easter, we don’t know what has happened. We gave some eggs to local schools in Crowle, Epworth Haxey and Owston Ferry for a lucky pupil to enjoy and we hope they managed to organise that before the 20th when most pupils reverted to home schooling. However, we do have a number left over after some Lions and others have bought them. We hope to raise about £2,500 each year that goes to help a variety of good causes around the Isle but as it stands, we look to lose a very valuable £1,000 from our funds this year due to the current health crisis. If any good souls in the Isle would like one of our eggs for £25 to help us limit our loss, we would be very grateful indeed.”
Lion President Glyn Snowdon said “ Every year we are out at Christmas collecting from the local residents, for which we are most grateful but at Easter it is the small businesses in the Isle that lend a hand by selling chances to win one of our Giant Eggs and we are equally grateful to every publican and business owner for that help. Most sell enough to have one winning egg but I must record our gratitude for the amazing efforts of the staff at the Red Lion Hotel in Epworth who have taken on 4 eggs for the past few years. Our thoughts and support are with all these businesses, and their staff in particular, now that they have had to shut their doors for some time to come. We look forward to seeing them all when things improve. Our funds will be depleted this year due to the Easter Egg problem but we are continuing to work towards our Car and Vehicle Show at Epworth Showground on September 6th, all being well.”
!!Thanks to everyone who helped. we found homes for all of the eggs!!
A generous person purchased an egg & asked for it to be donated to NHS staff so we duly obliged.

A message from the Car Show Committee Chairman
"The Isle of Axholme Lions are delighted to announce that their recent Car Show at the Epworth Show Ground was a roaring success. It was the first time that we have held such an event and we are very pleased that we will be donating £3000 to the Air Ambulance. We have lots of positive feedback and as a result we will be doing it again next year hopefully at the same venue and a similar time. We would like to thank all those who attended, all the vehicle exhibitors the Traders and the Epworth Showground Committee for their help and advice. A big Thank you to the British Legion for proving security and to some Rotary members who helped on the day with parking. A particular big thank you must go to David Poulter ,of the Epworth Show Committee for his patience and understanding giving us advise from our initial enquiry right through to the day itself.
It is not long now before Santa on his new Lions sleigh will be visiting you all on the Isle."
Thank you for supporting the Lions in all their fundraising events.

Mowbray's of Haxey, is the latest business in the Isle to become a distribution point for our Message in a Bottle scheme. The popular cafe in Haxey have already given away their fisrt batch of bottles and have taken delivery of more of the potentialy life saving containers. Ben & Lisa Hepworth (pictured left) of Mowbray's, say they are are delighted to help the Lions with this worthwhile scheme. |
The bottle is kept in the fridge, where the emergency services will be able to find it in the event of being called to your home. We will know you have a bottle by the two labels displayed on the inside of the front door or on the main entrance to your home and the other is for the door of your fridge.
This scheme is free to the user. Whilst it is focused on the more vulnerable people in our community, anyone can fall downstairs, so this scheme can benefit anyone, including you. |
Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization. We have 1.35 million members in more than 45,000 clubs in over 206 countries and geographic areas. Founded in 1917, we are best known for fighting blindness, but we also volunteer for many different kinds of community projects, including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled

The Isle of Axholme Lions Club was formed in 1966 to raise funds for a variety of projects important to local communities and to support Lions' national and international charitable causes. Situated in the Westernmost part of North Lincs, separated from the rest by the River Trent with Doncaster to the West and Scunthorpe to the East, the two main towns are Crowle and Epworth, there are 12 parishes containing 21 settlements, in an area of approx 52,000 acres and a population around 19,000. We are part of Lions Clubs International, British Isles & Ireland, in District 105E covering Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland.
We are twinned with the De Bernisse Lions Club in the Netherlands, it is located to the South of Rotterdam, we have a very close relationship with the club, both socially and fund raising, having experienced several exchanges and jointly funded projects together

Our main fund raising is during December (1st - 24th) when we travel all over the Isle of Axholme with Santa's float, this has raised many thousands of pounds a year, over several years.

We also hold a giant Easter egg raffle over the three weeks up to Good Friday. Locating about 35 eggs at various pubs, shops, schools and other premises throughout the Isle.

Our annual golf tournament in June, now in its 22nd year, hosted at the Lincolnshire Golf Club, Hirst Priory, between Belton and Crowle, is another regular fund raiser which has also raised thousands of pounds over the years.
Other fund raising events, past and present, have included numerous quizzes, Burns suppers, sportsman's dinners & entertainment evenings, barbecues, bonfire nights, auctions, carol singing, hog roasts, even clay pigeon shoots and splat the rat!
